Day Camp Leader (Young Leader)

Temporary, Full-Time (July 4 - August 21, 2023)

We’re looking to hire Day Camp Leaders who are responsible for helping to run Promise Vancouver’s Summer Camp children’s program. This staff member will serve as part of Promise Vancouver’s Summer Team.

About Promise

Promise Vancouver’s guiding principle is the core truth that every child is valuable and loved and it is our mission to help children and youth find security and wholeness in this knowledge. We are a Christian-based nonprofit organization, based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, and an independently operating member of UrbanPromise International. The Promise approach is to Reach a Child, Raise a Leader, Restore Community, which we put into practice through long-term relationships and intentional programs.

We offer two main programs: for grades 1 to 7 we have After-School Programs and Summer Day Camps where we strive to help children overcome systemic barriers by increasing their competencies in literacy, social connection, and mental health. For grades 8 to 12 we have the Young Leaders Program, a paid employment opportunity for teens where they lead and mentor their younger peers, receive mentorship, and gain valuable life skills.

What you’ll be responsible for

As our Day Camp Leader, you will be responsible for helping to run Promise Vancouver’s Summer Camp children’s program in the Downtown Eastside. As a leader on the programs team, your work will have an immediate and meaningful impact on children in a community that faces complex challenges.

This is a full-time (35h/wk, Monday to Friday 8:30am to 3:30pm), seasonal position (starting July 5, ending August 21). You must be 15 to 18 years old.  You will be entrusted with the following responsibilities:

  • Work with fellow Day Camp Leaders to run Promise Summer Camps, under the guidance of the Day Camp Coordinators and Program Directors.
  • Facilitate enriching activities and games for elementary-aged children.
  • Co-lead and care for groups of children, with attention to community-building and personal development through strong friendships.
  • Recognize that the children we serve are more likely to have factors in their life that make them vulnerable and apply this sensitivity as you lead.
  • Through words and actions, affirm the inherent value of each child.
  • Be a strong team player, able to collaborate well with others.
  • Assist with fundraising activities to help further the work of Promise Vancouver.
  • Participate in all staff meetings (morning briefing and prayer, and end of day debrief).

The Day Camp Leader will be directly supervised by the Program Managers and Executive Director.

The following words describe our team members:

  • Loving – genuine compassion to all, a trait we believe is reflective of God’s heart
  • Humble – teachable and open
  • Servant Leader – willing to work hard and do any job
  • Relational – values relationships with children and staff
  • Role Model – leads in a healthy way through actions and words
  • Empowering – wants to help others grow
